Changbaishan Tianchi
Lake Crater lake atop Changbai Mountain on China–North Korea border
Crater lake on Mount Changbai at the China-North Korea border, surrounded by forest reserves; visitors hike trails, view the caldera lake and visit hot springs.
Changbaishan Tianchi is a crater lake occupying the caldera of Mount Changbai (also called Baekdu) on the China-North Korea border. The lake is one of the most famous mountain lakes in northeast Asia and a major natural landmark in Jilin province.
The lake sits within a steep-walled caldera and is noted for its clear water and seasonal ice cover; the caldera rim rises sharply around the lake, producing vantage points and short trails for visitors. Popular viewpoints are clustered on the Chinese approach and facilities focus on viewing the lake and nearby waterfalls. The lake’s dimensions and depth make it an imposing volcanic crater lake within the regional mountain landscape.
The caldera and lake formed through volcanic activity of the Changbai/Paektu volcanic complex; the volcano has produced major eruptions in the past and the lake occupies the summit crater. Over time the area has been used as a sacred and cultural landmark and more recently as a protected scenic area with visitor infrastructure.
The lake lies in northeast China’s Jilin province near the international border with North Korea, on the slopes of the Changbai/Paektu volcano. The surrounding landscape is alpine forest and volcanic peaks, with most visitor access arranged from the Chinese side.
- Best time: The lake surface sits inside a volcanic caldera at high altitude and is frequently ice-covered in winter; best viewing months are late spring to early autumn when access and visibility are easiest.
- Border location: The site lies on the China-North Korea border; some viewpoints and trails are on the Chinese side in Jilin province.
How to Get to Changbaishan Tianchi #
Changbaishan Tianchi (Heaven Lake) is reached from the Chinese side via the gateway towns around Changbai/Erdaobaihe (Antu County) in Jilin province. Visitors typically travel by road from regional centres (Baishan or Yanji) to the Changbai Mountain scenic-area parking and visitor centre, where shuttle buses or park vehicles operate toward the crater lake.
There are no public highways right up to the crater rim; from the visitor parking areas visitors either take park shuttles or walk the marked trails (the final approach is steep). Most travel is by private car, coach or organized tour from regional cities; plan for a multi-hour drive from the nearest major regional centres.
Tips for Visiting Changbaishan Tianchi #
- Approach Changbaishan Tianchi from the Chinese side (Erdaobaihe/Changbai county) and aim for the earliest cable‑car slots or morning hikes; the crater lake is frequently fogged in by midday and early arrivals give the best chance of clear views.
- Buy park tickets and cable‑car reservations in high season ahead of time and use the official scenic‑area entrances; most independent day‑tour buses arrive later in the morning, so an early start avoids the big tour groups.
- Be aware the lake straddles the China-North Korea border - sightseeing facilities and viewpoints are concentrated on the Chinese side, as access to the DPRK side is generally closed to foreign tourists.
