Certosa di Pavia

A large Carthusian monastery and church complex near Pavia in Lombardy, Italy, renowned for its richly decorated façade and ensemble of monastic buildings. The foundation dates to 1396 under the patronage of Gian Galeazzo Visconti and the complex developed over the late medieval and Renaissance periods.

The site comprises the principal church with an ornate marble façade, cloisters and conventual buildings that originally housed the monastic community and now accommodate a museum and visitor routes. Tourists come to view the façade, the church interior and surviving cloisters.

Founded at the end of the 14th century, the Certosa was established as a Carthusian charterhouse under Visconti patronage and subsequently accumulated artistic and architectural additions through the Renaissance. Over time the site has shifted from an active monastery to a heritage complex with public access.
