Cerro Paranal
Mountain Andean mountain hosting ESO's Very Large Telescope observatory
Cerro Paranal hosts the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope on a desert summit prized for clear night skies. Limited public tours and astronomy-focused visits draw photographers and amateur astronomers.
Cerro Paranal is a mountain in Chile’s Atacama Desert that hosts the European Southern Observatory’s Paranal Observatory. The site is notable for its high, dry summit and world-class astronomical facilities.
The observatory on Cerro Paranal houses the Very Large Telescope (VLT), an array made up of four 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes and four 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes used for high-resolution imaging and interferometry. The site also hosts wide-field survey instruments such as the 4.1-metre VISTA telescope.
Selected and developed by the European Southern Observatory in the 1990s, Paranal was built to take advantage of the region’s exceptionally clear skies and low atmospheric water vapor. The observatory has been a cornerstone of modern optical and infrared astronomy since it became operational.
Cerro Paranal is located in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile, within the coastal Atacama Desert. The summit’s high elevation and dry climate make it one of the premier ground-based astronomical sites in the world.
- Altitude: Summit altitude is about 2,635 metres above sea level, giving access to exceptionally dry, stable air ideal for optical and infrared astronomy.
- Visitor access: Public access is restricted; guided visits and tours are offered only by the observatory on a limited basis.
What to See #
- Very Large Telescope (VLT): Home to the Very Large Telescope array, which comprises four 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes and four 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes used together for interferometry and independently for imaging and spectroscopy.
- VISTA: A 4.1-metre wide-field infrared survey telescope located on the same mountain and used for large-area sky surveys in the near-infrared.
- Residencia (staff accommodation): An on-site accommodation complex designed to house scientific and technical staff working at the observatory and to protect them from the harsh desert environment.
How to Get to Cerro Paranal #
Paranal is remote; international visitors generally fly into Antofagasta or Calama and then join an ESO-arranged tour or charter transfer. Public visits are limited and usually require advance booking through ESO’s outreach program; private access is restricted due to the operational nature of the site.
Tips for Visiting Cerro Paranal #
- Book tours well in advance with ESO or affiliated operators; visits to Paranal are tightly scheduled and often require affiliation or a tour arranged through ESO.
- Visit in winter months of the southern hemisphere (June-August) for the clearest skies, but check tour availability well ahead.
- Bring warm clothing: desert nights at altitude are cold even in summer, and wind can cut through layers.
- If lucky enough to join an observation night, silence and darkness are enforced rigorously - the experience is cinematic and best respected.
Best Time to Visit Cerro Paranal #
Cerro Paranal is an observatory rather than a tourist site; the best times correspond to clear, dry months in the Atacama (winter and shoulder seasons) when the skies are most transparent.
