Central Mountain Range
Mountains Major mountain spine running down Taiwan's center
Running down Taiwan’s spine, the Central Mountain Range holds high peaks, dense forests and long trails; hikers come for multi‑day treks, waterfalls and encounters with Indigenous communities.
The Central Mountain Range (Zhongyang Range) is the principal mountainous spine running north-south through central Taiwan, forming the island’s central highlands and containing many of Taiwan’s highest summits. It is a dominant physiographic feature that shapes climate, rivers and ecosystems across the island.
The range comprises high peaks, steep ridges and deep valleys, with numerous summits exceeding 3,000 metres and extensive alpine and subalpine zones. It is the focus for long-distance trekking, ecological study and several national parks and forest reserves.
Peaks and watersheds in the range support diverse forests and endemic species; the mountains also have cultural importance for indigenous communities. Infrastructure in many parts is sparse, so access for hiking and mountaineering requires preparation and respect for protected-area rules.
The range runs through central Taiwan and separates the island’s wetter eastern slopes from the drier western plains, crossing multiple administrative regions and connecting with other local ranges and protected areas.
- Geographic role: The range runs broadly north-south through the centre of Taiwan and forms the major east-west climatic and hydrological divide on the island.
- Safety and preparation: Many sections are remote, with steep terrain and high precipitation; prepared hikers should plan for multi-day routes and check park regulations and weather forecasts.
What to See #
- High peaks and ridgelines: A set of high alpine peaks and ridges that include multiple summits above 3,000 metres, forming the central spine of Taiwan's mountainous interior.
- Trails and protected areas: A network of trails, forested valleys and protected areas managed under several national parks and reserves, used for multi-day trekking and access to remote mountain huts.
Best Time to Visit Central Mountain Range #
Autumn (October-December) generally offers the most stable weather and clearest mountain views; avoid the summer typhoon season for high‑elevation hiking.
