Cenacle

The Cenacle is the traditional site on Mount Zion in Jerusalem associated with the Christian Upper Room and the Last Supper. The room is located within a historic building complex immediately outside the walls on the south-west side of the Old City and is a focus of Christian devotion.

The site has a long devotional history in multiple faith traditions and was rebuilt and modified at different times, including significant medieval-era work; it has been used as a church, mosque or shrine at various points in later centuries. Its identification with the Last Supper dates from early medieval pilgrimage traditions.

The Cenacle sits on Mount Zion, immediately outside the southwest wall of Jerusalem’s Old City, close to other landmarks such as Dormition Abbey and the traditional Tomb of David.

What to See #

• The Upper Room (Cenacle): A large rectangular upper-floor hall traditionally identified with the Last Supper and containing later-period decorative elements; it occupies the upper level of the Mount Zion complex.
• Lower chamber and traditional Tomb of David: A lower-level chamber and adjoining areas traditionally associated with David's Tomb and adjacent pilgrimage sites, visited together with the upper hall in many tours.
