Cempoala

Cempoala is a pre‑Columbian Totonac archaeological site in Veracruz state, Mexico, notable for its plazas, pyramidal platforms and Mesoamerican ceremonial architecture and for contacts with the Spanish in the early 16th century.

Excavated stone platforms, raised plazas and a clearly visible ballcourt define the principal visible areas, complemented by scattered carved stones and architectural fragments. An on‑site area with interpretive panels and a small museum helps visitors understand the layout and artifacts.

Constructed and occupied by Totonac peoples during the Late Postclassic period, the site was among the first indigenous cities encountered by Hernán Cortés in 1519, after which local alliances and Spanish influence reshaped the region.

The ruins lie near the modern village of Cempoala in Veracruz state, inland from the Gulf of Mexico coast and accessible from regional roads and nearby towns.
