Celle Castle (Schloss Celle) is a former ducal residence in the town of Celle, Lower Saxony, notable as a well‑preserved Northern German palace with Renaissance and Baroque elements.

Tour routes commonly include the historic ducal apartments, period interiors and local museum displays, together with the adjacent Schlosspark and landscaped grounds. The castle complex sits amid Celle’s timber‑framed old town and is a focal point for cultural visits and guided tours.

Originally a medieval stronghold, the site was transformed over centuries into the residence of the dukes of Brunswick‑Lüneburg and was rebuilt and expanded in Renaissance and Baroque phases between the late medieval period and the early modern era.

The palace stands in the centre of Celle on the River Aller in Lower Saxony, roughly 40 kilometres north of Hanover and within easy driving distance from the regional transport network.

• Setting: The castle sits in Celle’s old town beside the River Aller, and the town’s well‑preserved half‑timbered streets make it easy to combine a palace visit with a walking tour of the historic centre.

What to See#

• Ducal apartments: Historic ducal apartments and state rooms open as a museum showing period interiors, furnishings and local history collections.
• Schlosspark: Formal castle park and surrounding grounds that provide one of the main public green spaces adjacent to the palace complex.

Celle is about 40 km north of Hanover. From Hanover Hauptbahnhof take regional trains (Metronom or regional RE lines) to Celle station - the ride is roughly 30-40 minutes. The castle is a short walk (5-10 minutes) from Celle Bahnhof via Bahnhofstraße and Schlossplatz.

• Enter through Schlossplatz and take the guided interior tour for the Baroque state rooms and the carved wooden ceilings (guided tours are often only in German - check ahead).
• Don't skip the surrounding Altstadt: the timber‑framed market streets and Hoppener Haus show how Celle's aristocratic and civic life mingled.
• Visit in late spring when the ducal gardens are planted and the Schloss's façade shows off its yellow Baroque stucco.
