Cayo Coco
Island Barrier island with long beaches and resorts
Cayo Coco is a barrier island known for long white beaches, coral-fringed waters and resort development; activities include snorkeling, birdwatching-especially flamingos in nearby lagoons-and sunbathing along protected coastal bars.
Cayo Coco is a coral island in the Jardines del Rey archipelago off Cuba’s northern coast, administratively in Ciego de Ávila Province. The island is developed for tourism with numerous resorts and long sandy beaches backed by mangroves and low coastal vegetation.
Beaches on Cayo Coco feature shallow, clear waters and nearby coral formations that support snorkeling and diving; the island is also important for birdlife, including flamingos in nearby wetlands. Infrastructure includes hotels, roads and an airport serving the resort zone.
The cay lies off the northern central coast of Cuba and is accessed by causeway links from the mainland and neighbouring cays; it forms part of a string of keys and is separated from the main island by shallow channel waters.
- Beaches and reefs: Part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago, noted for long white-sand beaches and shallow fringing reefs that attract beach tourism and marine activities.
How to Get to Cayo Coco #
Cayo Coco is reached from the Cuban mainland by a long causeway (the Jardines del Rey Pedraplén) that links the island with the town of Morón on Ciego de Ávila Province. The causeway drive from Morón onto Cayo Coco is the standard road approach; there is also Jardines del Rey (Cayo Coco) airport on the island for domestic flights.
Once on Cayo Coco, resorts and beaches are reached by local roads; many visitors fly into the island airport or drive across the causeway from the mainland.
Tips for Visiting Cayo Coco #
- Go out at dawn for birdwatching and calmer seas - the island's interior lagoons and salt flats are best seen early when flamingos and other waterbirds are most active and light is best for photos.
- Use the Pedraplén causeway (the main road link from the mainland) as your arrival route and plan transfers ahead; many independent day visitors find organized birding or nature tours useful to reach the quieter natural areas.
- Venture beyond the main resort beaches to the island's northern shore and lagoon observation points with a local naturalist guide; these inland wetlands and observation towers are often missed by sun-and-sand visitors.
Best Time to Visit Cayo Coco #
