Cave of the Patriarchs
Tomb Ancient subterranean shrine and biblical patriarchs' tombs
The Cave of the Patriarchs is a rock-cut burial site and religious complex in the Old City of Hebron in the southern West Bank, venerated in Judaism, Islam and Christianity. The present enclosing hall includes large Herodian-era masonry built around the cave.
The site contains a stone enclosure above a subterranean chamber and a set of interior cenotaphs traditionally associated with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca and Leah. The complex is notable for its surviving Herodian stone facade and the interior arrangement that accommodates both Muslim and Jewish worship.
Arrangements inside the building create distinct prayer areas and historic architectural layers visible in the hall - visitors commonly see medieval and later Islamic additions alongside the ancient stonework.
A major enclosing structure was erected around the cave in the Herodian period, commonly dated to around the turn of the first century BCE. Over the centuries the complex was altered by Byzantine, Crusader, Islamic and Ottoman interventions; parts of the superstructure and interior reflect these successive phases.
In the 20th century the site became a focal point of competing religious claims and conflict; security arrangements and access policies have changed several times in response to events in the modern era.
The complex sits in the Old City of Hebron in the southern West Bank, roughly 30 kilometres south of Jerusalem, within the built fabric of Hebron’s historic centre.
