Cave of Swallows
Amusement Park Enormous open-pit cave popular with base jumpers
The Cave of Swallows (Sótano de las Golondrinas) in San Luis Potosí is a vast vertical sinkhole favored by climbers, base jumpers and birdwatchers; visitors watch nesting birds, abseil into the shaft or view the dramatic drop from the rim.
The Cave of Swallows (Sótano de las Golondrinas) is a large open‑pit cave in the state of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, known for its dramatic vertical shaft. It is renowned among cavers and adventure sports enthusiasts for its depth and sheer walls.
The principal feature is the almost vertical cylindrical shaft that drops to the cave floor, with a freefall descent used by rappellers and base jumpers. Bird activity at sunrise and sunset is notable, as swifts and other species emerge and return in large numbers, creating visible spirals of flight. The scale of the shaft and the exposure make it a destination for technical caving and observation rather than casual tourism.
The shaft is a natural karst sinkhole formed in limestone. Modern exploration and popular awareness grew during the 20th century as spelunkers and adventure sports participants mapped and documented the site.
The cave lies in the Huasteca Potosina region within the municipality of Aquismón, San Luis Potosí, and is accessed from local roads and trails that lead to the sinkhole rim.
- Depth: The shaft is one of the world's largest open-air vertical caves, with a nearly continuous drop of roughly 370 metres to the bottom.
- Wildlife: Swifts and other birds form large dawn and dusk emergence and return flights, which are a major attraction for observers and photographers.
Tips for Visiting Cave of Swallows #
- Go at dawn to watch the swifts and other birds streaming out of the sinkhole - the movement of the birds is most dramatic in the early morning light.
- Book a local guide or tour from Aquismón in advance if you plan to descend (rappelling) or access restricted areas; the ejido/community manages access and guides can arrange permissions and safety equipment.
- Use the rim viewpoints rather than getting close to the edge; the sinkhole's walls are steep and fragile, and designated viewing spots give safer, full-angle views without disturbing the terrain.
Best Time to Visit Cave of Swallows #
The dry season (November-April) is the best time to visit for safer access and clearer conditions for exploring the sinkhole.
