Cave of Saint Ignatius Monument

The Cave of Saint Ignatius (Cova de Sant Ignasi) is a small cave and religious site in Catalonia linked to Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s period of retreat in the early 16th century. The site is an established place of devotion and pilgrimage.

Ignatius of Loyola stayed in the Manresa area in 1522 during a spiritual retreat and developed material that later contributed to his Spiritual Exercises; the cave has been venerated since as the site of that retreat and has a small chapel and devotional installations added later.

The cave sits in the Manresa region of Catalonia and is accessed from the nearby town; it is part of local pilgrimage routes associated with Ignatius’s life.

The cave sits in Catalonia near small villages off the N-240 between Tarragona and Lleida. From the town of Vimbodí i Poblet, follow local rural roads toward the Ebro gorge; the last stretch is a marked footpath of roughly 1-1.5 km with stone steps. There is limited roadside parking near the trailhead; expect an unpaved access lane and a short uphill walk.

• Arrive early in the morning to avoid the mid-day tour groups and catch the cool air that still lingers in the cave.
• Wear sturdy shoes - the approach path includes uneven limestone steps and damp patches.
• Bring a light jacket: temperatures inside the cave stay several degrees cooler than outside year-round.
• Look for votive inscriptions carved into the rock near the altar - small pilgrim graffiti from the 18th and 19th centuries is best seen close up.
