The Catskill Mountains are a broad region in upstate New York. From New York City the most direct driving route is north on I‑87 (the New York State Thruway/I‑87) toward the Catskills, with total driving times typically around 2-3 hours depending on the specific part of the Catskills you are heading to. Once in the region use state routes and county roads to reach trailheads, towns and park entrances; public bus and seasonal rail services connect some towns to NYC but schedules vary by destination.

- Visit on weekday mornings or in the shoulder seasons (late spring, early fall) to avoid weekend crowds that concentrate at popular trailheads such as Kaaterskill Falls.
