The Catskill Mountains are a prominent upland region in southeastern New York State forming part of the broader Appalachian area. The range includes forested peaks, deep valleys and public lands used for recreation and conservation.

The region offers a network of marked trails and state lands for hiking and backcountry camping, ski areas and inland waterways for paddling and fishing. Notable natural highlights include high summits such as Slide Mountain and scenic waterfalls and gorges accessed from roadhead trailheads across multiple counties.

The Catskills have long been used for timber, grazing and seasonal recreation; during the 19th and 20th centuries the area developed as a major resort and outdoor recreation destination for New Yorkers, with infrastructure added for hiking and winter sports.

The Catskills lie roughly northwest of New York City, covering parts of several upstate counties; the region is reached by road and rail from the metropolitan area and is a few hours’ travel from Manhattan depending on route and traffic.

  • Elevation and recreation: Highest summit reaches 4,180 feet (1,274 metres), and the region contains extensive public forestland with marked hiking trails and state-protected areas.
  • Seasonal highlights: Popular in autumn for foliage displays and home to year-round outdoor activities including hiking, skiing and climbing at managed resorts and public trail systems.

What to See #

  • Slide Mountain: Slide Mountain, the highest summit in the Catskills at 4,180 feet (1,274 metres), is a common objective for peak-baggers and offers marked trails to the summit.
  • Kaaterskill Falls: Kaaterskill Falls area, a well-known cascade and trailhead zone that provides access to nearby hikes and viewpoints within the eastern Catskills.

How to Get to Catskill Mountains #

The Catskill Mountains are a broad region in upstate New York. From New York City the most direct driving route is north on I‑87 (the New York State Thruway/I‑87) toward the Catskills, with total driving times typically around 2-3 hours depending on the specific part of the Catskills you are heading to. Once in the region use state routes and county roads to reach trailheads, towns and park entrances; public bus and seasonal rail services connect some towns to NYC but schedules vary by destination.

Tips for Visiting Catskill Mountains #

  • Visit on weekday mornings or in the shoulder seasons (late spring, early fall) to avoid weekend crowds that concentrate at popular trailheads such as Kaaterskill Falls.
  • Choose less-used trailheads like North-South Lake or Platte Clove to find quieter overlooks and lake beaches; many visitors stick to the most famous falls and miss the broader park scenery.
  • Check New York DEC notices before you go for seasonal trail closures and parking rules (mud season and winter restrictions affect access), and plan hikes that start early to secure parking at smaller trailheads.
