Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is the Roman Catholic cathedral in central Brussels and the seat of the archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. Construction of the present Gothic structure took place mainly between the 13th and 16th centuries.
The cathedral is characterised by its twin western towers and an expansive Gothic nave with notable stained-glass windows and a large historic organ. It continues to host major civic and religious ceremonies and is a principal landmark in Brussels’ historic centre.
Built over an earlier church, the current stone cathedral developed across several centuries from the high medieval period into the early modern era and became Brussels’ principal parish and ceremonial church.
The building stands between the Royal Park and the Place Royale in central Brussels, within easy walking distance of the Royal Palace and many national institutions.
