Cathedral of Santo Domingo
Church Oldest cathedral in Americas, colonial Gothic-Baroque
In Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone, the cathedral (Santa María la Menor) dates to the early 16th century and is one of the Americas’ oldest; tourists come for its Gothic-Caribbean architecture and colonial tombs.
The Cathedral of Santo Domingo, formally the Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor, is the principal cathedral in Santo Domingo and is widely regarded as the oldest cathedral in the Americas, with construction beginning in the early 16th century.
Architecturally it combines Gothic and early Renaissance elements and contains a main nave, chapels and significant colonial-era religious art; the interior includes funerary monuments that attract many visitors. The cathedral functions as an active seat of the archdiocese and as a monument to Spain’s early colonial presence in the New World.
Construction began under Spanish colonial authorities in the early 1500s and work continued through the mid-16th century, reflecting the patterns of colonial ecclesiastical building in the Americas. Over the centuries the building has been maintained and adapted while preserving its core medieval-European architectural character.
Located in the Ciudad Colonial of Santo Domingo, the cathedral sits close to Plaza de la Cultura and seafront areas and is typically visited together with other nearby historic sites and museums.
