Church Ruined medieval Armenian cathedral at Ani archaeological site
Within the ruined city of Ani, the Cathedral exemplifies medieval Armenian architecture; visitors come for stone-carved façades, collapsed domes, and sweeping views across the Armenian-Turkish borderlands.
The Cathedral of Ani is the principal church ruin within the medieval city of Ani in Kars Province, eastern Turkey, and is an important example of medieval Armenian ecclesiastical architecture. It dates to the period when Ani was the capital of a medieval Armenian kingdom.
The ruined cathedral presents surviving masonry walls, large arched openings and the remains of the main nave and eastern apse, giving a clear sense of its original scale and architectural form. The cathedral sits within a broader archaeological landscape of city walls, churches and civic remains that visitors can walk among.
Commissioned in the late 10th century during the Bagratid Armenian kingdom, the cathedral was built as the city’s main church and underwent damage from earthquakes, conquest and long-term neglect before modern archaeological attention. The building has been studied and conserved as part of the Ani site.
Perched on a hill overlooking the Arpaçay (Akhurian) valley near the modern Turkish-Armenian frontier, the cathedral stands within the ruins of Ani in Kars Province and is accessible from regional roads to the historic site.
