Castle Stalker
Castle Small island castle, preserved medieval tower house
Perched on a tidal islet in Loch Laich, Castle Stalker requires a boat approach; photographers and history buffs visit the compact tower house and nearby coastal scenery in the Scottish Highlands.
Castle Stalker is a four-storey tower house standing on a small tidal islet in Loch Laich, near Port Appin in Argyll, Scotland, with origins in the medieval period (14th-15th centuries). It is a compact example of a Scottish tower house and a well-known regional landmark.
The castle sits isolated on rock and is a strong visual attraction rather than a large complex. From the shore at Port Appin it forms a prominent photographic subject; visiting the building itself requires a boat or an arranged landing and interiors are shown on restricted public opening days.
Originally built as a fortified residence for local lords and garrisoned at times, control passed between local clans in the medieval period. The building fell into disrepair and underwent restoration in the 20th century to preserve the tower house and its historic fabric.
The islet is on Loch Laich, a sea inlet connected to Loch Linnhe, close to the village of Port Appin on Scotland’s west coast, between Oban and the hills of Glencoe.
- Access and viewing: Located on a small tidal islet and visible from the Port Appin foreshore, with boat trips and shore viewpoints popular for photographs.
- Opening and tours: The castle is open to the public only on a limited schedule and visits are often by guided tour or private boat.
