Castle Rising Castle
Castle Norman castle noted for its well-preserved keep
Near King’s Lynn, Castle Rising preserves a Norman keep, moat and curtain walls; visitors come for medieval architecture, guided tours and riverside walks.
Castle Rising is a Norman stone castle in Norfolk, England, originating in the 12th century and notable for its large central stone keep and gatehouse. It is regarded as one of the better-preserved examples of a small medieval royal or baronial castle in east England.
The castle complex presents a massive rectangular keep, a defended gatehouse and fragments of surrounding curtain walls, together with pronounced earthwork banks. The arrangement of the keep and inner court allows visitors to appreciate defensive planning and domestic space in a compact Norman fortress.
The core structure dates to the 12th century, associated with the d’Albini family and later medieval occupants; the site has documented associations with notable medieval figures and was altered in subsequent centuries. It survived as a recognizable medieval monument rather than being completely rebuilt in later periods.
It stands near the Norfolk village of Castle Rising, within easy reach of King’s Lynn and the North Norfolk coast, set on low-lying ground typical of the region.
