The Castle of Santa Catalina is a coastal bastion built on a rocky platform beside La Caleta beach in Cádiz, Andalusia, dating mainly from the early modern period. It occupies a prominent rocky outcrop that projects into the sea and was part of the city’s coastal defenses.
The fort provides close views along La Caleta and across Cádiz’s waterfront from its terraces and battlements, and its compact plan is typical of coastal defensive work. The immediate surroundings are popular for promenades and photography of the city shoreline.
Constructed and modified between the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle served as an artillery fortification guarding approaches to Cádiz; it has been repaired and adapted over centuries to meet changing defensive needs.
