The Castle of Óbidos is a medieval fortress overlooking the walled town of Óbidos in Leiria District, Portugal, and is a prominent feature of the town’s historic centre. Parts of the castle complex have been repurposed for hospitality and tourism.
The castle and the adjoining town walls form a compact historic ensemble that visitors can walk, offering views over the whitewashed streets of Óbidos and the surrounding agricultural plain. The castle interior contains accommodations and spaces adapted for visitor use as part of a state-run historic hospitality programme.
The site originated as a fortified settlement in the medieval period and was modified by successive rulers; the castle became a royal possession in the Middle Ages. Over the 20th century the fortress was conserved and adapted for tourism and accommodation.
Perched above the small town of Óbidos in central Portugal, the castle sits within the town’s medieval walls and is within easy driving distance northwest of Lisbon.

How to Get to Castle of Óbidos #
Óbidos is about 85 km north of Lisbon. Regular buses connect Lisbon’s Sete Rios station to Óbidos (journey about 1-1.5 hours). Driving from Lisbon on the A8 and N8 is straightforward; parking is outside the medieval walls and the castle is a short walk uphill into town.
