Castle of Elvas
Castle Large fortified citadel and bastioned walls in Elvas
Elvas’s fortress complex forms part of a large star-shaped border citadel near Spain; visitors examine bastions, a long aqueduct and military architecture that reflect centuries of frontier defence.
The Castle of Elvas is a principal element of the extensive fortifications of Elvas in Portugal’s Alentejo region and forms part of a UNESCO-listed fortified town. The castle and surrounding bastioned walls reflect major military works of the early modern period.
Visitors can explore battlements, bastions and the castle keep that form part of an integrated defensive system including moats and glacis. The fortifications offer sweeping views across the Alentejo plains and toward the nearby Spanish border.
The castle and town defences were expanded and modernised particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries as trace-italienne style bastioned fortifications were completed to respond to artillery warfare. The system played a strategic role on the Portuguese-Spanish frontier.
The castle stands within the walled town of Elvas in Portalegre District in eastern Alentejo, close to Portugal’s border with Spain.
- UNESCO status: Part of the larger fortified system of Elvas that is a UNESCO World Heritage site under the 'Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications' listing.
- Fortification style: The castle and walls include large bastions and glacis typical of 17th- and 18th-century trace-italienne fortifications, with panoramic views over the Portuguese plain toward Spain.
