Main image

Kasteel de Haar is a large, late-19th/early-20th-century country castle at Haarzuilens in Utrecht province, Netherlands, known for its comprehensive medieval-style restoration. The present complex and its grounds date largely from a restoration begun in 1892 and carried out into the early 20th century.

The site presents a moated castle with multiple towers, outer gatehouses and formal gardens. Guided tours allow access to restored state rooms, decorated interiors and display suites; the estate hosts seasonal events and exhibitions in the grounds.

A medieval castle stood on the site historically, but the visible fabric today is dominated by the restoration commissioned by Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nyevelt and executed by Pierre Cuypers between 1892 and about 1907. The restoration recreated and enhanced medieval forms rather than conserving an unaltered medieval palace.

The castle sits at Haarzuilens, northwest of the city of Utrecht in central Netherlands, within a rural estate of parkland and agricultural land. It is served by local roads from Utrecht and nearby towns and is a short drive from the A2/A12 corridor.

  • Visiting: Open to the public with guided tours of the main rooms and regular seasonal events such as flower shows and historical reenactments.
  • Restoration dates: Major reconstruction took place between 1892 and 1907 under architect Pierre Cuypers for the Van Zuylen family, which defines the castle's present appearance.

What to See #

  • Main castle and towers: Situated at the core of the estate, the main residential block and towers were rebuilt during the late 19th and early 20th century restoration by architect Pierre Cuypers, which recreated medieval forms and interiors commissioned by the Van Zuylen van Nyevelt family.
  • Moat and drawbridges: The moat and drawbridges surround the castle and form the principal exterior defensive feature; the current water-filled moat dates to the 19th-century reconstruction rather than medieval fortification.
  • Gardens and parkland: Formal gardens and parkland flank the castle and are used for seasonal displays and public events; the grounds include landscaped parterres immediately around the castle and wooded park beyond.
  • Interior state rooms: A selection of restored state rooms and showrooms are open on guided tours, displaying original furnishings, stained glass and the late 19th-century decorative program installed during the Cuypers restoration.
