Castle Crags
Cliff Granite spires forming dramatic mountain crags and trails
Granite spires rise in Castle Crags State Park along I-5 in northern California; climbers, hikers and highway travelers stop for short trails, rock routes and wide views of the Klamath foothills.
Castle Crags is a cluster of steep granite spires and cliffs in northern California, prominent above the Sacramento River Canyon and protected across state park and wilderness designations. The formations are a well-known landmark on the Cascade Range foothills north of Redding.
The area offers rugged granite towers, steep talus slopes and forested ridgelines with multiple short to moderate trails, viewpoints and creek crossings. Hikers commonly experience exposed rock faces and sweeping canyon views; some routes connect to long-distance trails.
The crags are the exposed remnants of an ancient granitic intrusion shaped by uplift, erosion and glacial action over geological time. Land protection efforts created state park and wilderness units to conserve the rock formations, native vegetation and recreational access.
The Castle Crags formations sit in Shasta County, roughly south of the town of Dunsmuir and visible from Interstate 5, occupying the Sacramento River Canyon corridor in north-central California.
