Built in the early 1500s, the castle replaced earlier medieval structures and represents one of the early continental Renaissance influences on Spanish castle design. It has been conserved and is a notable local landmark.
The castle stands above the town of La Calahorra in a hilly landscape east of Granada, in inland Andalusia.
