Castell y Bere
Castle Ruined 13th-century castle set in remote countryside
Set above a Welsh valley, Castell y Bere presents rugged castle ruins, walking routes and mountain views; visitors combine the site with Snowdonia hikes and local history.
Castell y Bere is a ruined 13th-century stone castle in Gwynedd, north Wales, built in the early 1200s as a princely stronghold of Llywelyn the Great. It is one of the best-preserved examples of a Welsh princely fortress from that period.
The site contains substantial curtain wall fragments, an inner ward and the remains of towers that sit above the Dysynni Valley, offering wide rural views. The surviving masonry and defensive layout make it possible to read the castle’s plan on foot and to inspect the gate and inner enclosures.
Construction was undertaken by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great) in the early 13th century as part of the principality’s network of fortifications. It served as a military and administrative centre until it was captured by English forces during the campaigns of Edward I in 1283 and subsequently fell into decline.
The castle stands above the Dysynni Valley near the village of Llanfihangel-y-Pennant, in a remote area of Gwynedd surrounded by upland farmland and moor. The nearest larger towns are Dolgellau and Dolgellau-area centres to the west and northwest.
- Access: A short, steep footpath leads from the small car park down into the castle site, so sturdy shoes are useful.
