Castel Sant’Elmo is a large medieval fortress on the Vomero hill overlooking the city of Naples and the Bay of Naples. The site has a characteristic star-like fortification layout and dominates the surrounding cityscape.

Visitors use the fortress for wide, unobstructed views across Naples, the bay and Mount Vesuvius; the ramparts and terraces are primary vantage points. Inside the renovated fortification there are museum and exhibition spaces hosting historical and contemporary cultural programmes.

The site has medieval origins and underwent major alterations in later centuries to produce the angular bastions and defensive lines visible today; it served military and defensive functions over many centuries and was later repurposed for cultural use. Conservation and adaptive reuse have opened the fortress to visitors and exhibitions while preserving its historic structure.

Castel Sant’Elmo sits atop Vomero hill in the northwest quarter of Naples, providing a high vantage point over the city center, the port and the surrounding gulf.

Castel Sant’Elmo sits on the Vomero hill overlooking Naples. Take Naples Metro Line 1 to Vanvitelli station (Vomero) - from Vanvitelli it’s about a 10-15 minute uphill walk to the castle or a short taxi ride. Several funicular lines and local buses also serve Vomero for steeper sections.

By car the castle is a short drive (around 3-4 km) from Napoli Centrale station via the Vomero district roads; parking near the castle is limited so using the metro/funicular plus a short walk is usually easiest.

• Take the funicular up to the Vomero neighborhood to reach Castel Sant'Elmo-it saves a steep climb and drops you close to the fortress entrance.
• Plan to arrive in late afternoon for sweeping views across Naples and toward Vesuvius at sunset; the light transforms the bay and cityscape.
• Combine your visit with the nearby Certosa di San Martino (they are adjacent) to see complementary historic collections and panoramic terraces without backtracking.
