Castel Sant'Elmo

Castel Sant’Elmo is a large medieval fortress on the Vomero hill overlooking the city of Naples and the Bay of Naples. The site has a characteristic star-like fortification layout and dominates the surrounding cityscape.

Visitors use the fortress for wide, unobstructed views across Naples, the bay and Mount Vesuvius; the ramparts and terraces are primary vantage points. Inside the renovated fortification there are museum and exhibition spaces hosting historical and contemporary cultural programmes.

The site has medieval origins and underwent major alterations in later centuries to produce the angular bastions and defensive lines visible today; it served military and defensive functions over many centuries and was later repurposed for cultural use. Conservation and adaptive reuse have opened the fortress to visitors and exhibitions while preserving its historic structure.

Castel Sant’Elmo sits atop Vomero hill in the northwest quarter of Naples, providing a high vantage point over the city center, the port and the surrounding gulf.
