Castel dell’Ovo is a historic seaside castle on the small island of Megaride, connected to the Naples waterfront, and is considered the oldest standing fortification in the city. Its position on the bay provides wide views across the Gulf of Naples toward Mount Vesuvius.
The castle’s battlements and terraces are used as public viewpoints and occasional exhibition spaces; much of the attraction is the exterior setting and the promenade that joins the castle to the city. The castle’s popular name derives from a medieval legend about an egg placed by the poet Virgil to secure the fortress.
The site has Roman origins and was fortified in medieval times, with later rebuilds and restorations across centuries reflecting changing defensive needs. It has served defensive and representational roles and is now a cultural and tourist landmark.

How to Get to Castel dell'Ovo #
Castel dell’Ovo sits on a small peninsula on Naples’ seafront (Borgo Marinari / Via Partenope). It’s a short 5-10 minute walk from the Molo Beverello ferry and hydrofoil piers along the seafront. From Napoli Centrale you can take Metro Line 1 to Municipio and then walk about 10-15 minutes along the waterfront, or take a taxi from the station (roughly 10-20 minutes depending on traffic). From Naples Capodichino Airport the drive to the seafront is around 6-8 km and typically 20-30 minutes by car.
Tips for Visiting Castel dell'Ovo #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heaviest tourist traffic and to get the best light on the bay and Vesuvius-midday is busiest on the islet and causeway.
- Approach Castel dell'Ovo via the Borgo Marinari causeway (from the Naples seafront); the short walk onto the islet gives the best uninterrupted views back toward the city and gulf.
- Check whether the ramparts or interior exhibits are open before you go-many visitors stick to the exterior but the terrace views and small displays are worth the short extra wait when access is available.
