Castel Capuano

Castel Capuano is a medieval fortress in central Naples that became integrated into the civic and judicial life of the city. Its origins date to the Norman and medieval period when it formed part of Naples’ defensive and administrative core.

The exterior presents a defensive medieval profile set among narrow streets of the historic centre, and the building has been adapted for later civic uses rather than maintained solely as a military fortress. Architectural features from successive periods are visible on the facades and in surviving internal spaces.

Constructed in the medieval period by Norman or early Hohenstaufen authorities, the castle later hosted civic and legal institutions and was adapted to changing urban functions across the Renaissance and into modern times. Its role shifted from fortress to administrative centre as Naples grew and municipal authority developed.

Castel Capuano stands in the historic heart of Naples, close to Via dei Tribunali and other major streets of the old city, making it readily accessible from central squares and transit hubs.
