Archaeological Site Ancient Macedonian city ruins on the Thermaic Gulf
Ancient city on the Pallene peninsula founded in the Hellenistic era; visitors explore archaeological remains, the coastal setting and nearby Chalkidiki beaches.
Cassandreia was an ancient Macedonian city founded by Cassander in the late 4th century BCE on the isthmus of the Kassandra peninsula in Central Macedonia, established as a major Hellenistic urban centre and port.
Founded around 316 BCE by the Macedonian ruler Cassander on or near the site of older Potidaea, Cassandreia served as a fortified port and regional centre in the Hellenistic period and later passed through Roman and Byzantine phases. Over centuries the city declined and its population shifted, while the ancient urban layout influenced subsequent settlement patterns on the peninsula.
The ancient remains are located on the Kassandra (Cassandreia) peninsula in Central Macedonia, Greece, near the modern settlement of Nea Kassandreia and set on the narrow isthmus connecting the peninsula to the Chalkidiki mainland.
- Access note: The ancient site lies close to the modern town of Nea Kassandreia on the Kassandra peninsula, making it accessible by road.
What to See #
- Urban structure: The city had an inner acropolis, a harbour complex and a planned grid of streets, typical of Hellenistic urban foundations.
