Caspian Sea

Spa World's largest inland sea bordering five countries

The Caspian Sea, the world’s largest inland water body, offers Iranian shoreline resorts, fishing and birding, offshore oil infrastructure and coastal towns with local seafood traditions.

Main image

The Caspian Sea is the world’s largest enclosed inland body of water, situated between Eastern Europe and Western Asia and bordered by Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan. It is an endorheic basin with major ecological, cultural and economic significance.

Covering roughly 371,000 square kilometres and extending about 1,200 kilometres north to south, the Caspian varies greatly in depth - the northern sector is very shallow while the southern basin reaches maximum depths near 1,025 metres. The coastline includes extensive wetlands, delta systems and industrialised ports.

The sea is notable for its commercial fisheries, especially sturgeon species that produce caviar, and for significant oil and gas reserves beneath its seabed that have driven regional development and international agreements on resource management. Environmental concerns include fluctuating water levels, pollution and impacts on fish populations.

Geographically the Caspian lies between the Caucasus and the Central Asian plain; Iran occupies the southern shoreline while the northern and eastern shores lie in the Russian and Central Asian republics.

  • Size: Surface area approximately 371,000 square kilometres, making it the world's largest enclosed inland water body by area.
  • Depth and resources: Maximum depth around 1,025 metres, with strong ecological and economic importance for sturgeon fisheries and hydrocarbon resources along its coasts.

What to See #

  • Northern basin: Northern (shallow) basin is the broad, shallow area in the north that is typically only a few metres deep and supports extensive reedbeds and wetlands.
  • Southern basin: Southern (deep) basin reaches the greatest depths of the sea, including the maximum depth that approaches 1,025 metres in places.

Tips for Visiting Caspian Sea #

  • For birdwatching and calm water conditions, visit the Caspian coast at sunrise or sunset during late spring or early summer; that period offers milder weather and active wildlife.
  • If you're on the Iranian side, plan visits to designated protected wetlands such as the Miankaleh Peninsula (a recognized reserve) for concentrated birdlife and better infrastructure for visitors.
  • Be aware that coastal conditions, facilities and regulations vary a lot along the Caspian's long shoreline; check local advice and seasonal access rules for the specific region you intend to visit.
