Cascada Monumental

The Cascada Monumental is a large decorative fountain and sculptural complex in Barcelona’s Parc de la Ciutadella, created in the late 19th century as part of urban improvements for city exhibitions. It is one of the park’s most prominent architectural features.

The fountain complex combines a central cascade, staircases and multiple sculptural groups set within formal landscaping and a reflecting basin. The composition presents neo-Baroque and classical-inspired stonework with numerous allegorical sculptures and carved ornament.

The feature was conceived and executed in the late 1800s by architect Josep Fontserre, with documented early-career involvement from Antoni Gaudi; it was installed as part of the park’s later 19th-century development connected to Barcelona’s international exhibitions. Sculptural and architectural elements have been conserved and restored periodically since its original construction.

It sits in the northeastern quadrant of Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona, within walking distance of the Arc de Triomf and Barcelona’s old city; the park is in the Ciutat Vella district and is easily reached from central Barcelona.
