Casa Grande Ruins National Monument preserves the remains of a large prehistoric earthen structure known as the Great House near Coolidge, Arizona. The multi-story structure is one of the most visible surviving examples of Hohokam architecture in the region.

A short paved loop and interpretive signs allow views of the Great House from a protective perimeter; a small visitor center gives context about the site and the Hohokam culture. The ruin is notable for its remaining upper-wall sections and wall openings that suggest a once-taller, multi-level building.

The complex was built by the Hohokam people during the pre-Columbian period; archaeological evidence places construction and use broadly within the first and second millennia AD. The site was later recognized and protected by the U.S. federal government in the 20th century to prevent further deterioration.

The monument sits in Pinal County beside the town of Coolidge in southern Arizona, in a Sonoran Desert landscape of creosote and mesquite. It lies within driving distance of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is accessed from regional highways.

  • Visitor access: A fenced trail and small visitor center provide the main public access and interpretation; the ruin itself is viewed from a protected perimeter rather than by walking through the interior.
  • When to go: Best visited in cooler months when daytime temperatures are milder; summer can be extremely hot in southern Arizona.
