Carrickfergus Castle

Carrickfergus Castle is a well-preserved Norman castle on the northern shore of Belfast Lough in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. Its origins date to the late 12th century.

The castle’s keep, battlements and curtain walls are accessible to visitors who can climb towers and walk parts of the medieval fortifications. On-site displays and rooms present an interpretation of the castle’s military history and role in regional conflicts.

Founded in the late 1100s by the Anglo-Norman John de Courcy, the castle was developed and adapted over subsequent centuries and saw repeated military use and sieges. Its continuous occupation and repairs have left a layered historic structure showing medieval and later defensive features.

Sitting directly on the shore of Belfast Lough within the town of Carrickfergus, the castle is about 18 km north of Belfast and occupies a prominent coastal position.
