Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge
Building Suspension footbridge connecting mainland to Carrick-a-Rede island
Suspending across a chasm near Ballintoy, the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge links mainland to a small island; visitors cross for dramatic coastal views, geology of the Causeway Coast and the site’s fishing history.
The Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is a rope-and-plank pedestrian bridge on the County Antrim coast of Northern Ireland that links the mainland to a small island called Carrick. The present crossing recreates older fishing-era links and is a famous local attraction.
The short but exposed bridge crosses a narrow chasm and offers panoramic views of the nearby coastline and sea; walking across the bridge is the primary visitor activity. Clifftop footpaths and viewpoints on both sides provide alternative coastal vistas and photographic opportunities.
Originally erected by salmon fishermen to reach their nets, rope-style crossings have existed at the site for centuries; the current bridge is a maintained attraction that references that fishing heritage. The site is now managed as a protected visitor destination.
Located near the village of Ballintoy on Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast, the bridge sits on the Atlantic-facing shoreline of County Antrim.
- Dimensions: the bridge spans roughly 20 metres and sits about 30 metres above the sea at low tide, creating the dramatic crossing
- Management and safety: managed by the National Trust and often closed in high winds or when sea conditions are unsafe
What to See #
- Carrick Island: a small rocky island connected to the mainland by the rope bridge; historically used by local salmon fishermen
- Viewing paths: coastal paths and cliff-top viewpoints provide views back over the bridge and along the Causeway Coast
