Carnic Alps
Mountains Alpine mountain range along the Austria–Italy border
The Carnic Alps straddle the Austria‑Italy border with trails, alpine huts and World War I history. Hikers and climbers use high passes and ridge routes for long trekking days and cross‑border mountain scenery.
The Carnic Alps are a mountain chain in the Eastern Alps that runs along the border between Austria and Italy. The range includes rocky peaks, alpine pastures and glaciated cirques at higher elevations.
Peaks in the range rise to around 2,700-2,800 metres, with Monte Coglians (about 2,780 m) as the highest point. The area supports mountain tourism including hiking routes and winter sports in local resorts.
Historically the Carnic Alps were a frontier region and saw military activity in World War I; today they form a cross-border mountain landscape spanning parts of Austria’s Carinthia and Italy’s Friuli and Carnia regions.
- Location and activities: runs along the border between northeastern Italy and southern Austria and forms part of the Southern Limestone Alps, popular for hiking and skiing.
What to See #
- Monte Coglians: the range's highest point, Monte Coglians (also called Hohe Warte), reaches approximately 2,780 metres and straddles the Italy-Austria border.
How to Get to Carnic Alps #
The Carnic Alps run along the Austria-Italy border in southern Austria (Carinthia) and are reached by driving from regional towns such as Hermagor, Kötschach-Mauthen or Villach. Use the Austrian A2 (Süd Autobahn) or regional federal roads to reach those gateway towns, then continue on local mountain roads to trailheads; from road parking most peaks and ridges require hikes of varying length from the nearest trailhead.
Tips for Visiting Carnic Alps #
- Plan alpine outings in late June-September for most trails and mountain huts to be open; winter access requires alpine experience and local avalanche/weather checks.
- Use well-known passes such as Plöcken Pass (on the Austria-Italy border) as logical access points for road approaches and trailheads rather than attempting to reach the backcountry from unmarked minor roads.
- To avoid weekend crowds on popular ridge routes, start very early on summer mornings or pick weekday itineraries; much of the Carnic Alps remains quiet if you head for lesser-known valleys away from main passes.
Best Time to Visit Carnic Alps #
For hiking and clear mountain views, plan for summer (Jun-Sep); winter is for snow sports if you have the right gear.
