Carmo Convent
Religious Site Gothic convent ruined by 1755 earthquake, open-air church
In Lisbon’s Chiado, the Carmo Convent preserves the roofless Gothic church ruined in the 1755 earthquake and now houses an archaeological exhibition; visitors study the quake’s scars and period architecture.
The Carmo Convent (Convento do Carmo) is a partly ruined Gothic convent in central Lisbon whose roofless nave remains as a visible reminder of the 1755 earthquake. The complex now contains an archaeological museum within the surviving convent spaces.
The main visual highlight is the open-air nave with its exposed Gothic arches and columns that were left standing after the 1755 quake. Museum galleries in the adjoining convent buildings display archaeological material and interpretive exhibits that cover regional history and artifacts recovered from Lisbon and beyond.
Founded in the late medieval period, the convent was a prominent Carmelite foundation until most of its structure collapsed during the 1 November 1755 Lisbon earthquake. After the disaster, parts of the convent were conserved and later adapted to house a museum and cultural functions.
The convent stands on a hill in Lisbon’s Chiado neighbourhood, close to Largo do Carmo and within the historic centre, making it easily reachable on foot from several central plazas and transit points.
- Earthquake damage: The convent was largely destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake; the nave remains open to the sky and is one of the site's most striking features.
- Central location: Located on a hill in the Chiado district, the site is within walking distance of central Lisbon attractions and viewpoints across the city.
What to See #
- Roofless nave: The roofless Gothic nave and arches of the former church now form an open-air archaeological display that retains visible earthquake damage from 1755.
- Archaeological Museum: A museum occupying convent spaces that holds archaeological collections and artifacts covering regional history and prehistoric to medieval finds.
