Carmarthen Castle is a ruined medieval castle in the town of Carmarthen in southwest Wales, with origins in the Norman period of the 11th century. It occupies a raised position beside the River Towy and is one of the principal historic monuments in the town.
The site presents visible stone remains of a medieval gatehouse and short sections of curtain wall together with prominent earthworks from the earlier motte-and-bailey layout. The surviving masonry dates mainly to the 12th to 14th centuries and is concentrated around the central tower and gate area.
The castle was established by the Normans after the conquest of Wales and rebuilt in stone through the 12th and later medieval centuries. It was used variously as a military strongpoint and administrative centre for the county and later housed a prison before falling into ruin.
The castle stands in the heart of Carmarthen on the south bank of the River Towy in southwest Wales, immediately adjacent to the town centre and local roads serving the county.
- Best view: Located beside the River Towy in the centre of Carmarthen town, the castle is readily viewable from the riverside and the adjacent public green.
- Date of origin: Origins date to the Norman period in the 11th century, with major stone work added in the 12th to 14th centuries.
