The Carltheater was a prominent 19th-century theatre located in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt district, known historically for popular plays, operettas and the Viennese folk theatre tradition. It played a significant role in the city’s theatrical life during the 1800s.
Founded in the mid-19th century as a venue for popular theatre, the Carltheater hosted numerous plays and premieres associated with Viennese popular culture and playwrights of the period. Over the 20th century the building and its function changed with the city’s cultural and urban developments.
The theatre stood in the Leopoldstadt district of Vienna; the area is now a dense urban neighbourhood east of the historic Innere Stadt core.

The former Carltheater is in Vienna’s 2nd district (Leopoldstadt), roughly 2 km northeast of Stephansplatz in the historic center. It’s well served by Vienna’s public transport network - the major hub at Praterstern (regional trains, S-Bahn and U-Bahn/tram connections) is within a short walk; from there it is about a 5-15 minute walk depending on the exact address. By car it’s only a few minutes from the city center; expect short local parking or paid parking zones in the area.
