Carlsten

Carlsten (Carlstens fästning) is a coastal fortress on Marstrand island in Västra Götaland County, on Sweden’s west coast, dating to the 17th century.

The site is dominated by a compact stone fort with thick curtain walls, bastions and gun platforms that overlook Marstrand harbour and the surrounding archipelago. Visitors commonly explore the ramparts and internal chambers and use the battlements for views across the straits.

Construction began in the 17th century under Swedish royal authority to strengthen coastal defence and control the harbour at Marstrand; the fortress later held prisoners and was adapted in successive centuries. It has been preserved as a historic monument with visitor access to the main defensive works.

Carlsten sits on the high ground of Marstrand island, adjacent to the town and harbour, north of Gothenburg; the island is reached by ferry or boat from the mainland and is surrounded by the Bohuslän archipelago.
