Cariboo Mountains
Mountains Rugged subrange of British Columbia's Columbia Mountains
Remote subrange of the Columbia Mountains in British Columbia with glaciers, alpine lakes and timberline ridges; visitors come for multi-day backcountry hiking, fishing and historic ranching towns.
The Cariboo Mountains are a subrange of the Columbia Mountains in east-central British Columbia, Canada, characterized by rugged, glaciated peaks and deep river valleys. They form a distinct mountain block within the broader Columbia Mountain system.
Formed by long geological uplift and glaciation, the Cariboo Mountains have been used seasonally and sporadically by Indigenous peoples and later explored during interior exploration and resource-use phases of Canadian history. Parts of the range are contained within protected areas established to conserve alpine and forest ecosystems.
The range sits in east-central British Columbia, within the interior mountain zones of western Canada; access is generally from valley towns on the eastern slopes and via logging or backcountry routes rather than from large urban centres.
- Access note: Much of the range is remote alpine terrain with glaciers and permanent snowfields at higher elevations, requiring backcountry experience for safe travel.
Tips for Visiting Cariboo Mountains #
- Visit the Cariboo Mountains during the main summer window (July-September) when snow-free access to alpine meadows, lakes and hiking routes is most reliable.
- Expect remote backcountry conditions and use official park maps or contact BC Parks for recommended access roads and trailheads; many of the best high-country areas are reached by long forest or logging roads.
- If you want solitude, choose lesser-known trailheads away from the popular valleys and plan weekday starts; the park's subalpine meadows and glacier-fed streams are highlights that day visitors often miss.
