Caral
Archaeological Site Ancient pre-Columbian city and oldest Andean civilization site
Caral in the Supe Valley is one of the earliest urban centres in the Americas, dating to about 2600 BCE. Tourists explore monumental plazas, platform mounds and a small on‑site museum about early Andean civilisation.
Caral is an archaeological city in the Supe Valley of coastal Peru, dated to about 2600-2000 BCE and regarded as one of the oldest urban centres in the Americas. It is located in the Department of Lima and is notable for its early monumental architecture and city planning.
The site’s highlights are its large platform mounds, open plazas and sunken circular plazas used for public ritual and performance. Archaeological work has identified multiple large pyramidal platform constructions clustered around ceremonial plazas; the complex layout shows planned public and residential areas.
Caral was built by pre-ceramic coastal societies during the Early Formative period and was occupied during the third millennium BCE. Excavations in the 20th and 21st centuries have revealed construction phases and evidence for continuing occupation and modification across several centuries.
The ruins sit in the Supe Valley on Peru’s central coast, approximately 200 km north of Lima by road. The archaeological site is accessed from the coastal highway and local towns in the Supe basin.
- UNESCO status: Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009 for being one of the earliest complex urban centres in the Americas dating to roughly 2600-2000 BCE.
What to See #
- Central complex: The central urban complex contains multiple large platform mounds around open plazas and sunken circular performance spaces that date to the Early Formative period.
- Outlying sectors: Residential and irrigation sectors lie around the ceremonial core, showing planned urban layout and intensive use of local cotton and marine resources.
How to Get to Caral #
Caral (the Supe Valley archaeological site) is north of Lima and is reached by road along the Panamericana Norte. From Lima it is roughly a 3-4 hour drive (about 170-200 km) north by car or intercity bus; buses and shared vans run from Lima’s northern bus terminals to Supe/Supeco. The Caral site is a short taxi ride or roughly a 1-2 km walk from the Supe town bus stops.
Tips for Visiting Caral #
- Go early in the morning to beat the heat and most day‑trip crowds from Lima and to appreciate the site's layout and river‑valley views.
- Take a guided tour at the on‑site museum/visitor center - the guided explanation helps make sense of the urban planning and civic architecture that are not obvious from self‑guided viewing.
- Combine Caral with a short visit to other archaeological sites in the Supe Valley for context; allow at least 1-2 hours on site so you can walk the preserved plazas and pyramids rather than just photographing them from the perimeter.
Best Time to Visit Caral #
Caral is most pleasant to visit in the drier, cooler months (roughly May-September) when conditions are generally clearer for exploring the ruins.
