Carahunge
Archaeological Site Armenian stone circle and ancient astronomical observatory
Known as Zorats Karer, Carahunge in Syunik Province is a prehistoric megalithic site of standing stones; visitors study alignments, weathered carvings, and mountain views.
Carahunge, also called Zorats Karer, is a prehistoric megalithic site in Syunik Province, southern Armenia, consisting of numerous upright stones and stone settings. It is notable for its density of standing stones and a number of elements with circular perforations.
The site presents a broad scatter of basalt stelae across a gentle hilltop, with many stones set vertically and visible alignments and groupings across the area. Visitors examine the hole-bearing stones, walk between rows of stelae and see nearby burial features; interpretive resources are limited on site.
Archaeological study has identified the complex as prehistoric and likely used in the Neolithic to Bronze Age periods, with interpretations ranging from funerary use to astronomical or ritual functions. Excavations and surveys have documented burials and surface features but the site’s full chronology and purpose remain subjects of ongoing research.
Carahunge lies near the town of Sisian in Syunik Province, on a plateau with open views of the surrounding highland landscape and is reached by local roads from Sisian.
- Holes in stones: Some stones contain circular holes drilled through them; these features are a focus of study for astronomers and archaeologists.
- Scale: Often compared to other megalithic sites, the complex comprises roughly two hundred upright stones and related surface features.
What to See #
- Stone field: A broad field of vertically set basalt stelae and free-standing stones, many arranged in loose circular or linear groupings and some bearing circular perforations.
- Necropolis: An associated burial area with stone tombs and cist graves located close to the main stone complex, identified by archaeologists in surveys of the site.

Tips for Visiting Carahunge #
- Arrive early to avoid the small tour-group crush and to photograph columns without crowded foregrounds.
- Bring a local guide - recent scholarship on Carahunge's acoustics and astronomical orientations benefits from specialist explanation.
- Wear sturdy shoes; the stone field is uneven and some slabs are precariously balanced.
Best Time to Visit Carahunge #
Best in late spring through early autumn for access and comfortable conditions; clearer skies in summer are useful for archaeoastronomy interests.
