Cappella Palatina
Religious Site Palermo Norman chapel famed for Byzantine mosaics
Palermo’s Cappella Palatina sits inside the Norman Palace, famed for 12th‑century Byzantine mosaics and an intricately carved wooden ceiling reflecting Norman, Byzantine and Islamic craftsmanship; visitors come to study mosaics and medieval royal architecture.
The Cappella Palatina is the royal chapel of the Norman Palace in Palermo, Sicily, commissioned by Roger II in the 12th century and renowned for its extensive Byzantine mosaics. It combines Byzantine mosaic art with an Arabic-style wooden ceiling and Norman architectural elements.
The interior is covered with vivid mosaic cycles depicting biblical scenes and saints, and the wooden muqarnas-style ceiling shows the influence of Islamic craftsmen working in the Norman court. The chapel also contains a raised royal tribune and finely detailed liturgical furnishings.
Constructed in the 12th century as part of the Norman royal complex, the chapel served as the palace chapel and a symbol of the multicultural court of Roger II. It has been preserved and restored over the centuries and is a central element of Palermo’s medieval heritage.
Located inside the Palazzo dei Normanni in central Palermo, the chapel is reached from the palace courtyard and sits within the historic core of the city.
- UNESCO listing: Part of the Palermo Norman palace complex and included in the Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale UNESCO World Heritage listing.
- Notable features: The chapel is famed for its 12th-century Byzantine mosaics covering walls and vaults and for a richly decorated wooden ceiling with Islamic workmanship.
