The Capital Museum is a major municipal museum in Beijing that presents the history, archaeology and visual culture of the capital and surrounding regions. Visitors encounter galleries of ancient bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy and regional archaeology alongside temporary exhibitions that bring national and international loans to the museum. The building opened in its current modern form in the 21st century and includes interpretation in multiple languages.
Established as a municipal museum in the late 20th century, the institution expanded and relocated to a new purpose-built facility that opened in 2006 to better display and conserve its collections. Since then it has developed exhibition programmes and educational outreach.
