Capernaum
Archaeological Site Ancient biblical town on Sea of Galilee
Capernaum sits on the Sea of Galilee as an archaeological and pilgrimage site, with 1st-century synagogue ruins and remains associated with early Christian communities; tourists come for biblical history, lakeside views and archaeological interpretation.
Capernaum is an archaeological site on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel, known for early Christian associations and well-preserved ancient ruins. It was an important local settlement in Roman and Byzantine periods and is closely linked in the Gospels with the ministry of Jesus.
The site features the remains of a large ancient synagogue built of pale stone visible above ground and the excavated foundations of domestic structures. A modern octagonal church shelters the archaeological remains of a house traditionally identified as the house of the apostle Peter, and the area is arranged for visitor access with paths and interpretive signs. The combination of visible ruins, sheltered excavation areas and lakeside setting draws pilgrims and visitors interested in biblical history.
Capernaum was inhabited from the Hellenistic through Byzantine periods and became a significant Jewish and later Christian community in antiquity. The visible synagogue dates to late antiquity and was built over earlier foundations; in the Byzantine era the settlement included churches and pilgrim structures reflecting its religious significance.
The ruins sit on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, adjacent to modern pilgrimage sites such as Tabgha and the Mount of Beatitudes, and are accessible from nearby towns and road networks in Israel’s north.
- Main ruins: The archaeological site contains the remains of a large basalt synagogue from late antiquity and the excavated foundations of a house traditionally identified by Christians as the home of the apostle Peter.
- Visitor conservation: The modern visitor area includes a protective octagonal church built over the excavated house-remains, allowing viewing while conserving the underlying archaeology.

Capernaum is on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee beside Israel’s Route 87. By car it is about a 15-30 minute drive from Tiberias along the north-shore roads (Route 87 and local junctions), and roughly a 30-50 minute drive from Nazareth depending on route.
Local buses and organized tour minibuses run from Tiberias and other Galilee towns to the Capernaum archaeological site; there is parking at the site for private vehicles.
Tips for Visiting Capernaum #
- Arrive at opening time to beat the pilgrim and coach crowds that arrive later in the day; early visits also mean cooler conditions and clearer views of the archaeological remains.
- Use the main visitor‑center entrance off Highway 87 (near the modern parking area) as your starting point - most organized tours funnel here, so getting in at opening helps you explore the site more peacefully.
- Don't miss the octagonal Byzantine church marking St. Peter's house and the well‑preserved black‑basalt synagogue ruins - these in-situ structures are the archaeological highlights that many rush visitors overlook.
