Cape York is the northernmost point of mainland Australia, located at the tip of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. The cape marks the boundary between the Coral Sea to the east and the Torres Strait to the north.

The cape has been inhabited and used for millennia by Indigenous Australian communities of the Cape York region. European charting and increased visitation occurred during the age of exploration and later maritime navigation.

Located in far north Queensland, the cape projects into the Torres Strait at the northern end of the peninsula and is well north of the state’s major population centres.

  • Geographic extreme: Forms the northernmost point of the Australian mainland and is the tip of Cape York Peninsula.
  • Access note: Access to the cape and much of the surrounding peninsula is remote and often requires 4WD tracks or boat transport outside sealed roads.
