Prince of Wales Island (Queensland) Island

Prince of Wales Island (also known by its indigenous name Muralag) is a large island in the Torres Strait off the northern tip of Queensland, Australia. It is one of the major islands in the Torres Strait archipelago and is part of the state of Queensland.

The island is traditionally owned and inhabited by Torres Strait Islander peoples and contains coastal environments typical of the region, including mangroves, beaches and tropical vegetation. It is remote and accessed from other Torres Strait communities rather than by major urban centres.

The island is located in the Torres Strait between the northern tip of Cape York Peninsula and New Guinea, within Australian territorial waters and administered as part of Queensland.

Access is typically by private charter boat or regional ferry services operating out of Thursday Island and Horn Island; flights to Horn Island are the usual regional gateway. Arrange boat transfers in advance with local operators.
