Cesária Évora Airport / São Vicente (VXE): There are no airports on Santo Antão; the usual international route is to fly into São Vicente (Mindelo) at VXE and then take the passenger ferry to Porto Novo on Santo Antão. The ferry crossing from Mindelo to Porto Novo takes about 30-60 minutes depending on sea conditions; fares typically range from about 200-600 CVE (roughly €2-6), with schedules subject to change and seas in the rainy season.
Francisco Mendes / other regional air links: Some travelers reach Cape Verde via São Vicente or São Nicolau and then connect by ferry. Always check inter-island ferry schedules in advance-frequency varies by season.
Train: There is no rail network in Cape Verde.
Ferry / bus (aluguer) connections: Porto Novo is the principal ferry port on Santo Antão, and shared minibuses (‘aluguer’) connect Porto Novo with towns and valleys across the island. Aluguer fares are modest (typically a few hundred CVE) and travel times depend on the route and terrain-expect at least 30-90 minutes for many inland destinations given the island’s steep roads.
How to Get Around Porto Novo #
Porto Novo is a compact port town on Santo Antão, so walking covers most of the waterfront and central district. The harbor is the main transport hub for inter-island ferries to São Vicente (Mindelo). On-island travel relies on shared minibuses (aluguer), private taxis and moto-taxis; roads are steep and winding, so journeys between valleys take longer than they look on a map.
