Cape of Good Hope
Cape Rocky promontory at southwestern tip of Africa
A rocky headland within Table Mountain National Park near Cape Town, the Cape of Good Hope offers coastal trails, a historic lighthouse, and viewpoints for oceanic scenery.
The Cape of Good Hope is a rocky headland on the southwestern extremity of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa, long associated with the Age of Exploration and maritime navigation. It forms a dramatic promontory of cliffs and sea-facing slopes within Table Mountain National Park.
The headland is visited for its coastal scenery, walking paths and viewpoints such as the lighthouse at nearby Cape Point, along with wildlife sightings including seabirds and small antelope. Although popularly described as the southern tip of Africa, the true southernmost point of the continent is Cape Agulhas further east.
The cape entered European charts in the late 15th century when Portuguese navigators rounded the peninsula, opening direct sea routes between Europe and the Indian Ocean. Since the 19th century the area has been managed for conservation and tourism.
The Cape lies on the southwestern edge of the Cape Peninsula, approximately a one- to two-hour drive from central Cape Town depending on route and traffic, and is accessible by the park road that runs along the peninsula.
- Safety: Strong oceanic winds and steep cliffs require caution on paths and viewing platforms; suitable footwear is recommended for walks.
- Conservation status: The site lies within Table Mountain National Park and shares conservation management and entrance arrangements with the park.
What to See #
- Cape Point: Cape Point, a promontory within the same nature reserve with a historic lighthouse and visitor paths that offer elevated views over the ocean and cliffs.
- Promontory and cliffs: The Cape of Good Hope promontory and its steep rocky shoreline, marked by dramatic cliffs and sheltered coves popular with walkers and photographers.
How to Get to Cape of Good Hope #
By car: the Cape of Good Hope (Cape Point area) is reached from Cape Town by a scenic coastal drive through Muizenberg and Simon’s Town - expect about a 1-1.5 hour drive from Cape Town city centre (roughly 60 km). Follow the Main Road along False Bay toward Simon’s Town and continue on the road to Cape Point and the SANParks entrance.
By public transport: take the Metrorail Southern Line from Cape Town to Simon’s Town (roughly an hour), then a taxi or local shuttle from Simon’s Town to the Cape Point reserve entrance. Once inside the reserve there are short walking trails to key viewpoints and the lighthouse.
Tips for Visiting Cape of Good Hope #
- Arrive early (shortly after park opening) or late afternoon to avoid the peak coach-bus crowds that arrive mid-day and to get the best light for photos across the headland.
- Park at the Cape Point/Cape of Good Hope car parks and use the Flying Dutchman funicular at Cape Point to reach the old lighthouse quickly if you want to avoid the steep climb.
- Don't just stay at the main viewing platform - follow the marked reserve trails toward Dias Beach and the quieter headlands for less crowded viewpoints and different coastal scenery; these walks often reveal seabirds and shipwreck remains missed by brief stop-offs.
Best Time to Visit Cape of Good Hope #
Visit in the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) for milder weather, fewer crowds and good walking conditions.
