Main image

Cape Morris Jesup is a headland on the extreme northern coast of Greenland and marks the northernmost point of mainland Greenland. The cape was named by the explorer Robert Peary for the American philanthropist Morris K. Jesup.

The location is an austere High Arctic headland characterized by polar desert, sea ice and minimal vegetation; there are no visitor facilities and access is limited to scientific teams and polar expeditions. Wildlife sightings are uncommon and seasonal, focused on sea mammals and seabirds when sea-ice conditions permit.

The cape entered modern European maps during the era of Arctic exploration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was named by Robert Peary. It has been visited primarily by scientific and exploration parties rather than by tourism.

Situated on Greenland’s far northern coast facing the Arctic Ocean, Cape Morris Jesup lies well inside the High Arctic and is extremely remote from permanent settlements and transport links.

  • Northernmost mainland point: Located at the extreme northern edge of Greenland's mainland, it is the northernmost point of mainland Greenland and was named by Arctic explorer Robert Peary.
